In the fast-paced world of digital marketing, ‘best practice’ moves at breakneck speed. What was considered absolute gospel two years ago can easily become today’s wasted budget.
Marketers are constantly bombarded with rigid rules: ‘You must post daily,’ ‘Keep videos under 15 seconds,’ ‘Organic social is dead,’ or ‘B2B messaging should strictly stick to ROI.’
At a recent marketingSHOWCASE event, Jon Mowat, video marketing authority and Founder & MD at Hurricane Social, took our 5 in Twenty stage to challenge these exact orthodoxies. In his session, titled ‘Yes… but maybe: 5 social media truths worth rethinking,‘ Jon urged marketing teams to step back, question the rulebook, and look closer at what actually drives human behaviour and brand growth online.
Here is a breakdown of the five conventional social media “truths” Jon unpacked—and why a more nuanced approach could unlock your next big strategy breakthrough.
1. “Short-form video is always king”
Yes… but maybe.
It is easy to see why short-form video (TikToks, Reels, Shorts) dominates marketing strategy meetings. It is snappy, highly engaging, and gets high impression counts.
However, relying exclusively on 10-second clips creates a hidden problem: shallow brand recall.
While short-form video is fantastic for top-of-funnel reach and immediate visibility, longer, narrative-driven content is what actually builds emotional resonance, trust, and deep brand memory. If your entire video strategy consists of quick-cut trends, you might be grabbing attention without ever building a lasting connection.
The Shift: Don’t abandon short video, but pair it with richer, story-led long-form content that gives your brand room to breathe.
2. “You must feed the algorithm daily”
Yes… but maybe.
The pressure to maintain a relentless posting schedule often leads to one dangerous outcome: content fatigue. Marketing teams burn out trying to post five times a week, resulting in rushed graphics, generic copy, and ‘filler’ posts that offer zero value to the audience.
Algorithms favor engagement, not just volume. A low-quality post that gets ignored actually harms your overall account authority.
The Shift: Quality and distinctiveness will always beat sheer volume. Three well-crafted, highly strategic posts will do far more for your pipeline than seven rushed posts designed just to ‘keep the grid active.’
3. “B2B marketing Should always focus on features and logic”
Yes… but maybe.
In the B2B world, there is a long-standing belief that corporate buyers only care about feature lists, technical specs, and bottom-line pricing.
Jon points out a fundamental flaw in this thinking: B2B buyers are still human beings.
Psychological research repeatedly shows that emotional hook points – trust, status, peace of mind, confidence, and risk reduction – drive decision-making just as strongly in business purchases as they do in consumer retail. When every competitor is listing the exact same feature set, emotional connection and strong brand storytelling are often the deciding factors.
The Shift: Stop hiding behind dry corporate jargon. Injecting human emotion, humor, and narrative into your B2B video content makes your brand instantly recognizable and memorable.
4. “Organic reach Is dead – it’s paid or nothing”
Yes… but maybe.
With organic reach on major platforms sitting at historic lows, many brands throw their hands up and treat social media purely as a paid ad network.
While paid distribution is essential for guaranteed scale and precise targeting, viewing organic social as ‘dead’ misses its true purpose. Organic channels aren’t just for broad reach; they are your community validation engine. When a prospect sees your paid ad or meets you at a trade show, the first thing they do is check your organic channels to see if you are active, authentic, and trusted.
The Shift: Think of paid social as your megaphone to find new prospects, and organic social as your shop window that proves you are worth doing business with.
5. “Follow platform trends to stay relevant”
Yes… but maybe.
Jumping on trending audio clips, meme formats, and viral challenges can yield a temporary spike in views. But ask yourself: Does it actually align with your brand positioning, or does it just look like you’re trying too hard?
When every business on LinkedIn or Instagram uses the exact same viral audio template, individual brand identity disappears. Following trends blindly trades long-term distinctiveness for short-term vanity metrics.
The Shift: Instead of copying viral trends, focus on building distinctive brand assets – your own visual style, tone of voice, and recurring content formats that your audience instantly recognises as yours.
Question the rules, test the reality
Social media success isn’t about blindly adhering to a rigid set of guidelines. It is about understanding human psychology, testing assumptions, and balancing quick-win tactics with long-term brand building.
The next time someone tells you there is a ‘mandatory’ rule for social media, remember Jon’s framework: Yes… but maybe.
