Mastering GEO and AEO in the Age of AI Search

For nearly thirty years, the goal of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) was simple: win the click.

So what happened? You identified high-volume keywords, optimised your meta tags, built backlinks, and fought to secure a spot in the top three organic results on Google. If a prospect clicked your link, your website took over to drive the conversion.

In 2026, that linear path to digital visibility has dissolved.

With Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Claude answering multi-layered buyer questions directly on the screen, users no longer need to browse through a list of blue links. They get an immediate, synthesised response – often without ever clicking through to a website.

Welcome to the era of Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO).

Decoding the alphabet soup: SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO

While traditional SEO is far from dead, it has expanded into a broader ecosystem. To stay visible, marketing teams must understand how these three disciplines work together:

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). Its primary goal is to rank your web pages on traditional Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). The ‘win’ is higher organic rankings and direct website traffic.

The there’s AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation). Its primary goal is to position your brand as the direct source for immediate, zero-click factual answers. The win is winning Featured Snippets, Knowledge Panels, and Voice Search answers.

And now there’s GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation). The primary goal is to ensure Large Language Models (LLMs) cite, recommend, and synthesise your brand in complex conversational prompts.

Phew. But why the change?

Why GEO & AEO demand a strategy shift

Traditional SEO was fundamentally a keyword matching game. GEO and AEO are entity, context, and reputation games.

When an AI engine generates an answer for a potential buyer, it doesn’t just scan for keyword density. It evaluates E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) across the entire web.

To optimise for AI engines, progressive marketing teams are focusing on three core pillars:

1. High ‘information gain’ over commodity copy

AI models ignore generic text that simply repeats what is already publicly available. To earn a direct citation inside an AI synthesis, your content must offer information gain – proprietary research, first-party survey data, unique case studies, or expert commentary that the AI cannot synthesize from anywhere else.

2. Answer-first content architecture

AEO requires clear, machine-readable formatting. Rather than hiding key answers behind long introductory prose, adopt an answer-first structure. Lead sections with concise 2–3 sentence direct answers, followed by bulleted lists, structured tables, and clear FAQ schema. This makes it effortless for AI web-crawlers to parse and extract your insights.

3. Off-site ecosystem presence

LLMs don’t just evaluate your website; they crawl third-party review sites, industry forums, podcasts, digital PR mentions, and social discussions. If your brand is frequently cited across relevant industry ecosystems, AI models naturally recognize your business as a category authority.

And the good news? Ai visitors convert higher

While zero-click searches mean overall top-of-funnel web traffic volume may decrease, the traffic you do receive from AI search citations is significantly higher intent.

Because an AI engine has already educated the user, answered their preliminary questions, and recommended your brand based on specific requirements, prospects clicking through via AI citations arrive further down the sales funnel and convert at a substantially higher rate.
